The single best thing a leader has done in support of my career is sponsorship.  Separate from a mentor, a sponsor actively supports and advocates for your career advancement.  Usually a higher level leader, they use their influence and credibility to help you secure opportunities, promotions, or placement on highly visible projects.

Said my name behind closed doors: Often leaders and mentors are in meetings behind closed doors with their peers or their leaders and much of my career advancement has come from another leader knowing my skills and abilities as a result of my mentor discussing the positive work and impact I have on the organization.
