Great question. There are a variety of ways they can be deployed. From my own experience, here are some things that I have done and that I would encourage other supply chain leaders to consider.1) Start engaging and speaking to students in degree programs or master programs. Connecting with them early to provide practical insights is a force multiplier.
2) Invest time in coaching and mentoring younger professionals.
3) Provide continued training, especially in emerging technologies that will drive supply chain management in the future.
4) Provide cross-training and exposure to other aspects of the business or functions within the supply chain.
Top skills that supply chain professionals should be developing include but are not limited to technology-enabling tools, systems, and digital ecosystem maturity, becoming more financially savvy, understanding the globalized supply chain, and teaching emotional intelligence.
Successful Supply Chain Leadership requires a commitment to continuous learning, tech-savviness, a holistic vision, a collaborative cross-functional approach as well as adaptability and resilience facing changing circumstances. Additionally, leaders need the capability to influence and transform without authority, acting as trusted advisors through effective communication (storytelling).
