How do you break down silos and prevent them from creeping up between your respective COEs and HRBPs? It's easy to live on your own island; what has worked for you to ensure collaboration, communication, and alignment?

To break down silos and prevent them from reemerging, fostering open communication, encouraging collaboration, and promoting a unified company culture are essential. Here are some strategies that have worked:

Connect people via a common goal - Emphasise the company's goals to encourage cohesion among employees

Establish communication experts within the business - Designate individuals who excel at communication to facilitate information flow

Open your office up - Create an open environment by changing the office layout to an open plan and altering seating arrangements to encourage cross-silo relationships

Use collaboration training - Provide training to improve communication among employees from different departments

Establish a hierarchy that promotes accountability - Implement a management strategy that prevents silos from forming by ensuring all managers are aligned on the central business strategy

By implementing these strategies, organisations can promote a culture of collaboration, communication, and alignment, ultimately breaking down silos and preventing their resurgence.

Hopefully the Heads of the COE’s are members of the HR Leadership Team and therefore they are receiving feedback from Senior HR Business Partners about the needs of the business. Even better is if some of the COE Heads had prior business or HR Business Partner experience. It is also important to connect COE’s to the business in a way that they can learn about the business first hand (the actual way the business makes money, understanding the business challenges and their business strategic plans, understanding their pain points including with HR , etc.). That way, the COE’s will have a better understanding of business reality which should then be top of their mind when they are designing HR programs, HR initiatives, etc.

Sounds brilliant.  Cross fertilisation of ideas, people understanding other jobs in the business.  I guess you'd want to make sure it didn't get out of control, but someone from one function helping someone in another has ...read more
