What advice do you have for someone returning to work (same role) after an extended leave of absence? i.e. parental or personal leave. What are some ways I can get back up to speed quicker?

I always start a day before my actual return date. Probably a weekend to go through my email and chat.

Agree 100% on that one. One of my best practices!

Depends upon the length of extended leave. You have to get caught up on any changes in policies, procedures, workflows, and who are the key decision makers and leads. I would recommend that you ask your manager who the top 3-5 people are you should immediate sync with and which projects he/she things you should tackle first. Set realistic timeframes because there is no way you will be in the flow over night. Make sure you are clear on expectations and who you can sync with for assistance.

Start a day before, and at least go through your email. Meet your manager to catch up on any critical topics. If you delegated your tasks or projects, meet with them to see progress (if any). I suggest making a list, writing it down, formulating your thoughts, and then tackling each with priority and focus. Then, jump right into it.

I would say take your time and ease into things. Don't try to change or correct immediately; take a step back to understand what has changed in your absence - the “why’s,” “what’s” and “how’s”

I agree with Oluwatayo. I think it is also important to figure out 'who". Formal reporting structures may have changed or there could have been subtle shifts in responsibilities. Being able to "read the room" can take returning people a bit to relearn.

I recommend that you consider finding an outside third party to perform the audit.  I have had to do something similar with an unprofitable division/product line that reports directly to our CEO. We outsourced with Alvarez ...read more
