Industry, product/service offering, maturity, scale and many other factors will impact the question of whether or not it is 'enough influence'. I generally believe that  engineering is mission critical to all organizations in the modern world and should be at the table for all the critical decisions, even if that is simply to expand what is possible and constrain the improbable.

Engineering has a significant influence in a startup like I am in right now because we are creating a digital product. Just a big reminder that Product requires to be in that influence as an arbitrator, so we won't deviate from the correct path we should be directed to.
