We're using a hybrid working model in New Zealand at the moment. It's interesting but tricky. I've been looking at some good information from Microsoft around how to deal with being half remote and half hybrid. We have some good guidance in terms of how to run an effective meeting in a hybrid environment. And I’ve found that you do need to have team agreements on the days that you will come together to connect and other days where you don't. Each team might be slightly different depending on what they're doing.

Our office is never really closed and we now have three different versions of returning to work. It used to be as prescriptive as having everybody come in on Tuesday and Thursdays, if you had not designated yourself full-time remote. Then leadership decided that the office would be an open workspace you can use when you want. You have to show proof of vaccination and wear a mask depending on what the local ordinances are at the time. I think that model will remain.

We had a number of folks that have moved away from wherever they lived before the pandemic. We have no interest in trying to bring them back, but the people that didn't move might feel that the situation is unfair now that they’re being asked to come into the office a few days a week. My question is always: What does hybrid really mean? If you have all these choices, people get confused about what they want. And in terms of pay, depending on where you move there may be tax implications. It's tough if you don't pick a side between coming in and not coming in. I don't think there's a magic bullet, but when you leave too much choice to folks, people start feeling left out.

We said, I totally agree with too many choices it becomes very difficult to please everyone.  Another good point is people feeling left out and this lead to low morale.

During the pandemic we hired a number of staff who live several hours away from an office. This gave us access to top talent who can come to the office when needed.
This widened our talent pool substantially whilst supporting our hybrid model of using the office for collaboration not calls

We require 3 of 5 days in the office and the CEO has reiterated eventually we will be 5 days a week in the office

We’ve lost some employees over this already and also some recruits

I think the CEO will eventually make 3 of 5 the norm….. we shall see
