One angle I'd like to add is the discovery process. It's essential for product owners to engage with business partners and units early, discussing and planning features clearly and promptly. We've adopted a continuous discovery model, similar to the double diamond model, but tailored it to our needs. By time-boxing discovery activities and aligning them with shorter story cycles, we can focus on specific problems and provide outcomes quickly. This approach ensures that developers can continue working without delays, leading to better productivity. For instance, if developers have a capacity of 100 story points but are waiting on 450 story points, it's not efficient. Addressing this imbalance is crucial for productivity.

My approach often involves helping companies streamline their processes or aiding startups in scaling up. One of my first moves is to implement a quick workflow. I aim for work breakdowns where tasks can be completed within three days on average. This approach encourages team members to ask for help early if they encounter difficulties. Setting a quick turnaround time helps teams get into the habit of breaking down work and being clear about their objectives. This practice has made a significant difference in enhancing team productivity.

One of the biggest shifts we've seen is moving from a separate QA team to having developers write their own test case coverage and ensuring everything is automated from the first sprint. This shift in ownership to the key software engineers has significantly improved productivity. The metrics became more transparent, and issues became more visible, which helped in quickly identifying and addressing problems. Automation has been a huge win for the entire team.

Another key factor in improving productivity is leveraging the architecture function effectively. Different groups can approach the same problem in various ways: some may write extensive code, others might find an open-source solution, and some might opt for a paid package. The decision-making process on which approach to take can greatly impact productivity. It's crucial to have mechanisms in place to make these decisions wisely.
