A data management team in a marketing or sales perspective typically performs the following tasks:

Data Collection: The team is responsible for collecting data from various sources such as customer surveys, social media, website analytics, and third-party data providers.

Data Integration: The team integrates the collected data into a central database or data warehouse for easy access and analysis.

Data Cleaning: The team performs data cleaning to remove duplicate, inconsistent, or missing data.

Data Analysis: The team analyzes the data to uncover insights that can be used to improve marketing and sales strategies.

Data Reporting: The team creates reports that summarize the findings of the data analysis and present them to relevant stakeholders.

Data Governance: The team establishes and enforces data management policies and procedures to ensure data quality and security.

Data Maintenance: The team is responsible for updating and maintaining the data to ensure it remains relevant and accurate.

The goal of the data management team is to provide data-driven insights that can help inform marketing and sales decisions and improve overall performance.

First step would be to perform an analysis on the types of data that the marketing or sales/ commercial teams typically use. This can range from customer facing apps such as web activity or form submissions , inhouse CRM data, order to cash workflow related information, invoicing and financial aspects of it such as discounts, rebates etc.

Once these are identified, depending on the type of data(structured, unstructured or semi-structured data), the necessary systems which collect the data are identified and collected the data from.

While modelling the data for down stream consumption (reports/dashboards and/or other applications), business rules pertaining to Sales or Marketing are checked for and built into the pipelines.

Periodic review of the types, sources, pipelines and downstream applications are done to ensure business logic is upto date, data is current, trusted, usable and actionable.
