Have you ever had a software developer candidate push back against a take-home test as part of their interview? How did you respond?

I would suggest against a take-home test.  They should complete the test onsite as part of the interview.  I would also suggest it be written by hand with no access to the internet.  With AI, a candidate could easily cheat.

All of our testing is done on-line with observers who can answer questions if needed.   We're clear that the goal is to understand how they solve problems vs having a compliable piece of code.  So far, we haven't seen any issues with this approach.   Take home test seems like it could be ripe for cheating.

We haven’t tried a take home test. We have provided a laptop with a .net project loaded that would compile because of a somewhat tricky bug. Give the candidate 15 minutes alone to get it to compile.

In our case also, few candidates are not willing to complete online coding test. Can't do much in this case.
