How important is it for Data Management Officers to have access to an organization's sensitive data? Data Governance is new in my organization (Public Department), thus, my role is new too, and there is hesitation to give me access to the organization's data.

It sounds like your organization is very focused on User Access Management and is doing the right thing by limiting access to sensitive data.  I cannot think of scenarios where a DM Officer or DG Analyst should have direct access to data.  Maybe you can elaborate?

Hi Maritza, thank you for your response. As you may know, as the data management officer, I'm responsible for all data governance activities within my agency. Per DMBOK, which is my recommended framework, data governance involves many focus areas such as data quality management, data lineage, analytics, etc. I see a lot of potential missed opportunities because of lack of visibility on the data environment. I totally understand why there should be no edit access needed. However, how would you justify missed opportunities for data management due to lack of view access of the data?

The "first-glance" answer to your question is: "It's VERY important!" But I think it's a little more nuanced, considering the hesitancy that you've encountered.  Yes, it's really important, but it's all about balance.  That is, balancing the need for Data Management Officers to fulfill their crucial role while also exercising caution and hesitancy is a delicate yet necessary task. Providing access to an organization's sensitive data is essential for effective data governance implementation, enabling comprehensive understanding, proactive monitoring of data quality, and informed decision-making. However, it's equally important to address any organizational concerns surrounding data security and privacy by implementing robust safeguards and access controls. By striking this balance, I believe organizations can empower Data Management Officers to optimize data assets while ensuring the protection and compliance of sensitive information.
