Need to add more context.  Which platforms do you need to support?   Windows, LINUX, Mobile Devices?

We do our discovery through InTune and SailPoint then feed those records into our ServiceNow-CMDB.  What i like is that it is all in one place.  What i don't like is that we get false-positives that we end up chasing for weeks.  Our inventory is much cleaner now that we have put in place guidelines and metrics to ensure we maintain our data.  We make sure we have not devices that are showing lost/missing/destroyed that end up with an active heart-beat coming from InTune.  We also ensure that we do not have devices assigned to resources who have departed.  getting to this point where we are +95% clean has been a journey.

I would need more context. Are we talking about a repository? Workflow? Discovery? All of these above? It does matter what service management platform you are using? We are a service now show so it made sense for us to utilize the CMDB and we also purchased the service now HAM module. If you don't have a service management system then I would read this article https://www.gartner.com/reviews/market/hardware-asset-management-tools

I have heard good things about a few of these tools and I would pick the one that comes with a discovery tool if you don't have one.

If you do have service now then I would focus next on what discovery tools you have in your environment because it is easiest to integrate with existing tools. You should have something managing your desktop environments. I have integrated SCCM (windows) and JAMF (Mac) into service now. I am also pulling in data from Crowdstrike because it is required on all machines at my company. So look at what you have deployed and see if you can integrate. I also use Service Nows discovery to pull in server, network, storage etc. This tool can be expensive but it works well. You should also think about Software Asset Management and SAAS discovery tools like Zylo. Happy to answer any questions.
