You should be meeting with your customers on a regular basis, and far more than a few times a year.  Having a 15 or 30 minute weekly standup to provide a status update on existing work/projects, and to discuss the intake of potentially new projects, is a minor investment that can provide huge benefits.  Better yet, hire a product manager and make them responsible for your customer satisfaction and all customer interactions.  To most experienced product managers, the idea of only getting feedback a few times a year would be completely unsatisfactory.
