It might be best to place the senior AI official under the General Counsel or Chief Compliance Officer. This way, you get strong oversight on legal and ethical issues, which are crucial for AI. Technology departments might not focus enough on compliance, and the CEO probably won’t have the time or expertise for these details.

Not knowing what departments or C-Suite appointments your organisation has the role should report to a relevant C-Suite representative. Being either Chief Information Officer, Chief Information Security Office, or as Rebecca said the Chief Compliance Officer, if neither of these roles exists then either CEO or consider a new role of Chief AI Officer as just like security AI will become an integral part of an organisation over time.
