What do tech leaders need to know about cloud-to-cloud migrations?

In my experience, cloud-to-cloud migration has not been an easy task. I have attempted to do that twice and it was a hair-raising experience each time. I once had a big challenge with collocation when one of the cloud providers decided to close shop. They gave us a 60-day notice after which our datacenter would no longer be in operation. They had worked with us for four or five years and then they just decided as a group that they no longer want to be in that business. It was a serious problem trying to separate the servers from the cloud in their infrastructure to make sure we can migrate and collocate them into different premises. Unless you have 100% containerized your applications, it's not a migration — it's a rebuild.

That’s true. And I don't think anyone has reached 100% containerization, at least no one that I know of.

For enterprises, cloud-to-cloud migration is not possible. It's only possible for some small companies who were started recently, like startups. Enterprises will stay where they are, but they might move some background processes to a cheaper solution on the same platform. For instance, instead of using easy tools to run certain things, they might go for the containerized solution; then they can control it and don't have to pay the extra price.
