One challenge when I first joined Silicon Valley Bank over eight years ago was the lack of conversation around DE&I. The CEO and executive leadership didn’t talk about it frequently. However, we realized the importance of having these conversations, especially in light of recent events like the pandemic and George Floyd's murder. We started holding quarterly DE&I town halls, with our CEO and executives participating. Once our employees saw this, they realized that the leadership was not just talking the talk, but also walking the walk. These town halls allowed us to have difficult, uncomfortable conversations and set the tone for our business units and teams to engage. It became more of an everyday thing to have these conversations, especially when external events were impacting our employees' ability to do their best work. This was a success story at Silicon Valley Bank that I hope we can continue at First Citizens.Director of HR in Energy and Utilities7 months ago
In the heavy equipment industry, which is very male-dominated with a very low female representation, industry averages around 2% of females. As technicians, we have focused on a few different strategies. One of these is our committed partnership with Women Building Futures, which is expanding to provide females opportunities in the trades, and we are hiring them.We also have what we call the "Think Big" program. This is a two-year program that includes all of our core courses for technicians. We have indicated that each cohort we put through must include a specific number of females. Through these efforts, we have been growing our number of female technicians, and we have now doubled the industry average. While 4% may not seem like a lot, it is a significant improvement over the industry, and we view it as a success story.

Our organization has kicked off a series called Journey to Belonging. This monthly focus is to have our Employee Resource Groups (ERG) share their experiences, insights, bring guest speakers and build awareness and allies in the work of each ERG.
