Based on my Engineering Leadership experience as well as a short stint of leading RPA COE, I can consider a blend of tactical and strategic aspects.

From tactical perspective, standardizing tooling, architecture guidelines, automated pipelines, considering Gen AI capabilities as a service etc.

And from long term perspective, talent management, innovation, cross functional collaboration, governance & compliance, leveraging lean and agile principles and methods etc. will help in making it future proof.

I hope that helps in some way.

Ensure a clear definition of "platform engineering" in your organization.

So many terms we use or reuse in technology don't have a clear and ubiquitous definition.  Starting with a clear definition of what that group is in your company is beneficial to help its members understand what is expected of them.  It also helps when you need to grow the team because you can demonstrate its goals and illustrate where more help is required.

It also helps others outside the technical organization know the team's purpose, so they have correct internal expectations.

Once you can articulate the intended utility of the team, you can ensure proper goals are set, and individuals can correctly set their own growth plans to align with the trajectory of the team in the future.

i.e. If the team knows what will be expected now and in the future, they can adjust course to meet those expectations.
