To support new members of the team who are unfamiliar with data, especially those from different business areas, it's important to provide customized guidance and education. Start by understanding their background and then set clear expectations, offer training, and provide mentorship. Give them opportunities for hands-on experience, access to learning resources, and exposure to cross-functional teams. Foster open communication, encourage their curiosity, and celebrate their progress while remaining patient and empathetic throughout their transition.Associate Director of Data Science & Analytics in Healthcare and Biotecha year ago
Add context to everything, use analogies where possible. Imagine complex data flow as the intricate journey of an avocado from a farm in Chile to a local store near you. The farm where the avocado grows is the source, much like raw, unprocessed data collected from various source systems. Once harvested, the avocado travels by boat, representing the initial transmission of data across networks, possibly crossing data centers or cloud services. Upon reaching the destination country, its transferred onto trucks, which can be likened to data being processed and transformed into more usable formats within corporate systems. Finally, the avocado makes its way via cars to local stores, mirroring the distribution of refined data to various end-user dashboards or models. Any disruptions in the supply chain can affect the avocado's freshness and quality, just as interruptions or issues in data flow can compromise data integrity and timeliness. This sort of analogy can enable a mental model of the data, instead of trying to understand something in an abstract manner.
