Well said! We are in the process of creating development plans for all team members across our company (not just IT) that identify skills for the current role as well as identifying a future role the individual may be interested in. These will be reviewed through regular feedback sessions. Additionally, in addition to technical skills, it is important to include soft skills (communication, leadership, etc) as part of these plans.

I have both been mentored and served as a mentor to others. In my experience, the most effective mentors are those with direct experience in the field relevant to the issues I'm facing. For instance, if you work in IT and need to improve Service Desk response times, a mentor from the manufacturing sector may not be as helpful. However, if your goal is to understand the business better to enhance Service Desk services, then a manufacturing mentor could provide valuable insights.

We've also had development programs for new employees or team leaders, covering essential management tasks. These include classes on finance, accounting, budgeting, and HR topics like conflict resolution, team building, and performance review training.

It's important to remember that development programs are a two-way street. Attending them frequently won't be beneficial if you think you already know everything. However, if you approach these programs with an open mind, ready to contribute your opinions, listen to others, and try out new ideas, you will experience genuine development and growth.
