Over the past 30-plus years, I have received a lot of valuable advice from mentors and peers. If I had to boil it down to the three best pieces of advice to share, it would be:

1) Build a team around you that is passionate, competitive, driven, intelligent, problem-solvers, and top performers, and then let them do what they do best. So, hire and attract the right talent.

2) Invest in others to grow and develop their skills, competencies, knowledge, and leadership presence to develop the next generation of supply chain leaders. Give others the chance to lead without fear of failure, taking calculated risks, but be proactive in managing internal and external mechanisms that inform business performance.

3) Get out of your own way.

1. Focus on the basics -  Company, Business (P&L) and Supply Chain in that order
2. Look beyond metrics, have a balanced score card view to look for impact beyond supply chain
2. Never forget the customer - internal and external

Your plan will be wrong.  The sooner you realize this, the sooner you can focus on building a better plan for next time.
