Both technical and business is important, but technical background is more important, as the Chief Information Officer (CIO) you better know technology.VP of Global IT and Cybersecurity in Manufacturing4 years ago
Technical, in the C-suite the business background is usually covered well, but the technical aspects not as much.

WADR. it is not one or the other. A CIO to be successful, needs both.Vice President of Information and Security in Manufacturing4 years ago
You have to have both, Technical to understand your team and speak to them on their terms, but business minded to translate the technical jargon into business sense. You also have to be more strategic in your role as the CIOSenior Director, Defense Programs in Software3 years ago
CIOs mean a lot of different things, so industry and levels matter, no wrong answers here. For me though, any c suite leader needs to bring a lot to the table - technical excellence, business acumen, and much more.
I think the one missing from more CIOs is the business background or understanding. They must lead the business, and fewer know how to do this as well as they do run the technical aspects. Invest in bringing more to the role!
